Today, Malta is nothing like it was in the past. It’s humble beginnings started with the Megalithic civilization that was present around 5,000 BC. We don’t know much about the builders, but there are temples that are still present today that do show a glimpse into the history of the area. They also give us some insight about the Megalithic civilization. Here is a bit more information about these temples and the individuals that built them.
About Malta’s Megalithic Temples
The Haga Qin, Tarxien and Mnajdra temples are on Malta. The structures themselves are very architecturally advance. The walls of each of the external temples have large sets of blocks and the inside is dirt and rocks. One of the more interesting components of these temples has to do with the ways that they are decorated inside.
There are panels that have decorations that consist of things like animals and plants. These temples are massive in size and even some of today’s modern temples don’t compare to them as far as construction goes. All of this leads archeologists to believe that the Megalithic civilization was very wise and knew how to use their resources well. Until the discovery of Gobekli Tepe, these temples were the oldest free standing buildings in the world.
The Uses Of The Temples
There is no solid proof as to how the temples were used. We suspect that they were places of worship and gathering. Onsite there are also punic tombs. The temples are open to the public to visit today.
